We constantly hear from nutrition experts these days that we need to get more fiber in our diets. Fiber, in case you didn’t know exactly, is the part of plant foods that your body cannot digest or absorb, so it must expel. Even though fiber isn’t digestible doesn’t mean it isn’t beneficial. On the contrary, fiber helps you feel full and it helps you digest and get rid of the other foods you eat so they don’t build up in your colon.
One refreshing and delicious way to get lots of fiber at snack time is to grab a bowl of cereal. It’s not just for breakfast anymore, and paired with some ice cold, low-fat milk cereal can wake you up and fill you up during those midday blahs and give you the energy and focus to get through the rest of your day. With cereals, though, you want to check and make sure that you’re not getting too much sugar. It’s easy to get tons of fiber in cereals, however, in order to get tons of flavor to go along with it they’re often packed with sugar. Look for cereals with high-fiber flakes; beware of words like “clusters.” That usually means sugar. Ingredients such as flax, whole grain oats and brown rice are great. Fiber One is a straightforward fiber cereal that provides you with 57% of your daily fiber intake with only 60 calories per half cup and no sugar. If you’re craving something sweet throw some fruit on top, which is a good source of fiber as well.
