The arrival of fall is a very fun time when it comes to dressing up in all of the season’s hottest boots, jackets, sweaters and other cool weather fashion styles. But when it comes to outdoor workouts, the transitional seasons of fall and spring can be a total fashion pain. Exactly how does one dress to go for a long walk or a run when the temps are fluctuating by as much as 30 degrees, often in the same day? Well, with a little pre-planning, you’ll never be caught out in the cold, or the heat, while you’re outside working out in the fall.
Layers, layers, layers. That the key to dressing for a workout in the unreliable temperatures of fall. First of all, no one wants to exercise in a bulky or uncomfortable jacket; you need to be able to have an easy full range of motion, and your clothes need to be thin enough to move with you and breathe. So, wearing a jacket that is any thicker than a nylon or fleece warm-up jacket is pointless when you exercise outdoors. If you become too warm and remove the jacket, you’re likely to then be cold in your tank top or thin shirt. It’s better to dress in layers you can remove or add as you need to. A workout bra, followed by a tank top and a thin, comfortable t-shirt is ideal. Then, if you need to, you can bring along a thin track jacket that you can add or remove when you become warm during your workout and chilly as you cool down at the end.
