As a kid I absolutely loved to swim. We weren’t fortunate enough to have a pool of our own, but I had an uncle with a pool and whenever we would visit I would swim all day, nonstop, and my parents had a hard time getting me out of the water at the end of the day. So, it made perfect sense as an adult that I thought signing up for a water aerobics class was about the best idea ever. I remember arriving at the local high school pool where the class was being held and joining the group of women, who were all over the age of 65, and hopping in the water with me foam kickboard. 45 minutes later I had certainly done some splashing around, but I sure didn’t feel like I’d done a workout.
Well, times have certainly changed. And if you’re interested in checking out the newest water fitness trend, Aqua Zumba, there is one thing you should know – this ain’t your grandmother’s water aerobics class. Aqua Zumba is a serious workout that just happens to take place in water. Even better, it uses the buoyancy and resistance of the water to work your muscles harder than a regular Zumba class. Led by an experienced teacher who is actually standing up out of the pool on the deck, you follow along and dance your booty off while moving through the water. Aqua Zumba, to put it plainly, is a blast. THIS is what I wanted water aerobics to be like. And Aqua Zumba is seriously catching on, more and more cities and even small towns are offering these classes through their Parks & Rec. department, local YMCA or community center. Get back in the pool!
